Why get married in autumn: 6 good reasons

← Back to blog

What if the most beautiful season to get married wasn’t summer? Getting married in autumn means golden light, warm colours, suppliers who are finally available and a softer budget. More and more couples are going for it, and honestly, they are right. Here are 6 good reasons to say yes to an autumn wedding, plus a hen-party idea and the answer to THE question everyone asks: the weather.

Getting married in autumn, the underrated season

A bit of honesty first: I got married in autumn myself. So yes, I am a little biased. But that is exactly why I know, from the inside, why this season deserves better than its reputation as a second choice. Summer is still the default reflex, and yet getting married in autumn ticks so many boxes when you love authenticity, nature and warm, cosy moods. You swap the postcard wedding for something more sincere, more enveloping. And that changes everything.

1. Light and colours like no other

For the photos and the mood alike, autumn is a gift. The late-afternoon light turns low and golden, the foliage shifts to ochre, rust and burgundy, and every shot gains depth. The autumn wedding colour palette comes naturally: terracotta, mustard, plum, forest green, warm brown. You barely have to think about your colour scheme, nature hands it to you. And these warm tones flatter both the autumn wedding decoration and the outfits, from the groom’s suit to the bouquet. A season that photographs beautifully, no filter needed.

2. Suppliers who are available and truly present

Outside the summer peak, the best venues and suppliers have far more dates open. More choice, calmer exchanges, and above all full attention on the day. In high summer, a caterer or photographer can run three weddings in a single weekend. In autumn, you are not one file among ten: there is time to do things well, to refine the details, to listen to you. As the planner, it also means securing the team you actually want, not the one that was left.

3. An off-season budget

Many venues and suppliers charge off-season rates in autumn. For the exact same service, you often pay less than in mid-July. That frees up budget for what really matters to you: a better caterer, a photographer you love, a proper honeymoon, or simply some breathing room. 4. Seasonal flowers and a bouquet with character

Autumn has its own flora, and it has personality. Autumn wedding flowers range from dahlias to ranunculus, with grasses, coppery foliage and dried flowers. The result: an autumn bridal bouquet that is more textured, more wild, less smooth than the summer classics. In season, you can pick from:

  • dahlias, ranunculus and refined chrysanthemums

  • grasses and coppery foliage, for movement

  • dried flowers, durable and affordable

It is also the perfect time for dried flowers, which you can even make yourself. More on that just below, with a hen-party idea.

5. A decor theme that writes itself

This is where autumn is unbeatable. The autumn wedding theme almost writes itself: raw wood, candles,

linen, terracotta tableware, decorative pumpkins and dried-flower arrangements. Whether you lean towards a rustic autumn wedding or a boho autumn wedding, the season gives instant cohesion to the whole look. A few ideas that always work:

  • a linen table dressed with candles and foliage

  • dried-flower installations above the guests

  • shades of terracotta, rust and gold

To find your direction, search for autumn wedding inspiration on Pinterest and note everything that moves you: that is often where the best idea is born, the one that looks like you.

6. Venues and outdoor settings that play along

A good autumn wedding venue is one designed for the season: lovely indoor light, a fireplace or wood stove, and a real backup plan if the weather turns. Good news, an outdoor autumn wedding is entirely possible, especially in Provence and the Southern Alps where the late season stays mild. Picture a 4pm drinks reception in the sun, in a mas, under plane trees turning red: hard to beat.

The hen-party idea: make your own dried-flower accessories

Since we are talking dried flowers, here is a hen-party idea made for the season: a dried-flower accessory workshop. Crowns, combs, buttonholes, little bouquets... your friends leave with a unique piece, and you with handmade accessories for the day. It is friendly, creative, and far more memorable than yet another brunch. L’Atelier de Gaya offers this kind of experience, take a look at her world.

Getting married in autumn: what about the weather?

That is THE question. Yes, there is a risk of rain. But it can be anticipated, and that is exactly my job. A venue with a good backup plan, timing built around the light, a plan B that stays beautiful: and the rain becomes a detail, sometimes even the best photo of the day. In Provence and the Southern Alps, autumns often stay bright and mild into November. You do not endure the weather, you build it into the plan from the start.

My advice for designing your autumn wedding

Getting married in autumn means more availability, a softer budget, generous nature and unbeatable visual magic. But a season, however beautiful, is not enough on its own: it is the coherence of the whole that creates emotion. My role is to design your project from A to Z, from choosing the venue to coordinating the day, so everything holds together and you simply get to enjoy it.
